Leadership Team: Executive Vice President
As the Executive Vice President of Brown & Brown of Ohio, Ben manages the office’s growth, mentors teammates in their personal development, and oversees the performance of the entire Ohio team. In addition to these responsibilities, Ben continues to service a select group of customers where his primary role relates to contract negotiation, plan design, and creating long-term strategies for their benefits offerings. Ben joined the Brown & Brown team when his firm, Great Lakes Risk Management, was acquired in 2008.
Ben earned his Bachelor's of Science degree from Bowling Green State University with a specialization in Insurance and Risk Management. After graduating, Ben co-founded Great Lakes Risk Management in 1986, which grew to become the largest benefits-only brokerage firm in the greater Toledo area. Over the course of his 30+ year career in Employee Benefits, Ben has also served as an advisor to health insurers, governmental agencies, Brown & Brown on a corporate level, and to various members of the media. He holds his Ohio Life and Health Insurance licenses as well as licenses in over 20 other states within the U.S.
When he is out of the office, Ben enjoys being in the outdoors, either fly fishing or deer hunting. He is actively involved with Bowling Green’s College of Business and sits on the Department of Insurance Advisory Committee. Above all else, Ben loves spending time with his wife Jackie, his children and grandchildren.
Leadership Team: Property & Casualty Leader
Sharon’s role as the Property & Casualty Leader is to oversee the Commercial Lines department at Brown & Brown of Ohio. This oversight includes ensuring our customers have been provided the communication and service they desire with immediate responses and the technical knowledge needed for their risk management. Additionally, Sharon is the primary point of contact for our carrier partners on the Property & Casualty side. Building these relationships not only establishes trust, but it also allows for us to provide the best risk management through open communication between our customers and carrier partners.
After receiving her degree in Business Administration, Sharon joined Daniel James Insurance in 1986. She then joined Brown & Brown in 1998 through the acquisition of Daniel James Insurance. What allows Sharon to stand apart from the rest is her continual research into the various resources available in the industry and throughout Brown & Brown. By staying up-to-date with trends and changes through the years, she has been able to keep her customers informed and protected. By the same means, she is constantly opening doors to new opportunities for our account executives. Sharon holds her Ohio Property & Casualty resident license as well as her Ohio Surplus license, including more than 40 Non-Resident licenses throughout the country.
Outside of insurance, Sharon loves the outdoors. She and her husband consistently take road trips out west to visit Yellowstone and other national parks. Along the way and the entire time they are there, they are taking amazing photos of nature.
Leadership Team: Employee Benefits Team Leader
Angela is responsible for the overall operations of the Employee Benefits team, but she also takes on a variety of other roles for our customers. Once a renewal decision has been made, she is responsible for all contracting and team actions, including the development of education pieces, collecting employee enrollment information, and submission to the insurers. If a teammate has difficulty working with a vendor on a specific issue, Angela will step in to help get the problem resolved. Additionally, Angela has taken on the role of Team Resources leader in our office, handling recruitment, teammate development, and other HR-related functions for the agency.
Angela graduated from BGSU in 2004, with a degree in Middle Childhood Education. She also took coursework in Visual Communication Technology. Coming from a third-generation business-owning family, she found herself returning to the business world when she began working for Great Lakes Risk Management in 2005. Since then, Angela has worked in every position in our department, other than direct sales, and has developed the skills necessary to lead the team. She has also been invited to speak at various events, including regional benefits conferences and BGSU College of Business Administration events. Angela holds her Ohio Life and Health licenses.
Outside of the office, Angela and her husband frequently compete and attend regional and national American Quarter Horse Association horse shows. If they aren’t at a show, the two of them love to be in the outdoors and go on weekend camping trips with their dogs.
Leadership Team: Personal Lines Leader
As the Personal Lines Leader, Heather is responsible for the performance of the department at large. Her typical day includes ensuring policy accuracy, assisting customers with questions and changes, and supporting Maria in generating new business. With over 8 years of experience, Heather’s passion has been to build strong relationships with our customers, allowing her to build a level of comfort and trust, so when the worst happens, our customers know we will get them through it.
Heather joined Brown & Brown as an assistant to the Personal Lines Department. She was new to the insurance industry and shortly after joining Brown & Brown, she earned her Property & Casualty license along with her Term Life license. Prior to joining the Brown & Brown team, Heather worked for nearly 10 years in the pharmacy and health industry.
Heather resides in NW Ohio and enjoys spending time with family and friends. She also enjoys working on classic cars with her husband. The pride of the McAlees family is their 1988 Pontiac Firebird. Heather and her husband have done everything on their car and attend plenty of racing events with it.
Employee Benefits Account Executive
James joined the Brown & Brown team in August of 2014. In his role as an Employee Benefits Account Executive, he assists employers in designing and managing their employee benefit plans. He has been recognized within Brown & Brown for his attention to detail and support to all new and existing customers.
Before he became a part of the Brown & Brown team, James had worked in a multitude of Human Resources type positions in the UK, Germany, and even Australia. Through this variety of experience, he had become well-versed in HR and Benefits at an international level. James completed his undergraduate work at Nottingham Trent University in his home country of England. He then came to northwest Ohio and earned his MBA with a Finance focus from Bowling Green State University. He also holds his Ohio Life and Health insurance licenses and has earned the Certificate of Global Benefits Management from the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans.
James currently resides in Toledo, Ohio. He enjoys playing soccer, cricket, and squash in his free time. He is also an active participant with EPIC Toledo, the Epilepsy Center of NOW, the Toledo Children’s Hospital, and the BGSU College of Business Alumni Board.
Personal Lines New Business Coordinator
As our Personal Lines New Business Coordinator, Carmen is responsible for quoting our new business opportunities, gathering additional information from prospective clients and building the proposals once all the quotes have been gathered. However, when she isn’t directly supporting our sales team, Carmen is available to our current clients to answer questions, assist with claims and process certificates or payments when needed.
Carmen joined Brown & Brown in 2014 in an administrative support role and then spent four years working with the trucking industry. Prior to insurance, she had worked with the Toledo Regional Chamber of Commerce for a time. After joining Brown & Brown, Carmen quickly obtained her State of Ohio Property & Casualty Insurance license and has since been working towards earning different designations.
Currently, Carmen serves on four community outreach boards supporting those with mental illness, legal equality and the board she is most involved with provides resources that help others to help themselves. She stays so active with these boards because she wholeheartedly believes in what they stand for. However, what’s most important to Carmen is her boys and being able to show them what it means to help others.
