Leadership Team: Executive Vice President
As the Executive Vice President of Brown & Brown of Ohio, Ben manages the office’s growth, mentors teammates in their personal development, and oversees the performance of the entire Ohio team. In addition to these responsibilities, Ben continues to service a select group of customers where his primary role relates to contract negotiation, plan design, and creating long-term strategies for their benefits offerings. Ben joined the Brown & Brown team when his firm, Great Lakes Risk Management, was acquired in 2008.
Ben earned his Bachelor's of Science degree from Bowling Green State University with a specialization in Insurance and Risk Management. After graduating, Ben co-founded Great Lakes Risk Management in 1986, which grew to become the largest benefits-only brokerage firm in the greater Toledo area. Over the course of his 30+ year career in Employee Benefits, Ben has also served as an advisor to health insurers, governmental agencies, Brown & Brown on a corporate level, and to various members of the media. He holds his Ohio Life and Health Insurance licenses as well as licenses in over 20 other states within the U.S.
When he is out of the office, Ben enjoys being in the outdoors, either fly fishing or deer hunting. He is actively involved with Bowling Green’s College of Business and sits on the Department of Insurance Advisory Committee. Above all else, Ben loves spending time with his wife Jackie, his children and grandchildren.
Leadership Team: Property & Casualty Leader
Sharon’s role as the Property & Casualty Leader is to oversee the Commercial Lines department at Brown & Brown of Ohio. This oversight includes ensuring our customers have been provided the communication and service they desire with immediate responses and the technical knowledge needed for their risk management. Additionally, Sharon is the primary point of contact for our carrier partners on the Property & Casualty side. Building these relationships not only establishes trust, but it also allows for us to provide the best risk management through open communication between our customers and carrier partners.
After receiving her degree in Business Administration, Sharon joined Daniel James Insurance in 1986. She then joined Brown & Brown in 1998 through the acquisition of Daniel James Insurance. What allows Sharon to stand apart from the rest is her continual research into the various resources available in the industry and throughout Brown & Brown. By staying up-to-date with trends and changes through the years, she has been able to keep her customers informed and protected. By the same means, she is constantly opening doors to new opportunities for our account executives. Sharon holds her Ohio Property & Casualty resident license as well as her Ohio Surplus license, including more than 40 Non-Resident licenses throughout the country.
Outside of insurance, Sharon loves the outdoors. She and her husband consistently take road trips out west to visit Yellowstone and other national parks. Along the way and the entire time they are there, they are taking amazing photos of nature.
Leadership Team: Personal Lines Leader
As the Personal Lines Leader, Heather is responsible for the performance of the department at large. Her typical day includes ensuring policy accuracy, assisting customers with questions and changes, and supporting Maria in generating new business. With over 8 years of experience, Heather’s passion has been to build strong relationships with our customers, allowing her to build a level of comfort and trust, so when the worst happens, our customers know we will get them through it.
Heather joined Brown & Brown as an assistant to the Personal Lines Department. She was new to the insurance industry and shortly after joining Brown & Brown, she earned her Property & Casualty license along with her Term Life license. Prior to joining the Brown & Brown team, Heather worked for nearly 10 years in the pharmacy and health industry.
Heather resides in NW Ohio and enjoys spending time with family and friends. She also enjoys working on classic cars with her husband. The pride of the McAlees family is their 1988 Pontiac Firebird. Heather and her husband have done everything on their car and attend plenty of racing events with it.
Agribusiness & Commercial Risk Advisor
Amy’s role as an Agribusiness & Commercial Risk Advisor is to develop relationships with customers and prospects to understand their risks and provide solutions for their risk transfer strategy whether it be through standard insurance or an alternative program such as a captive. Since she joined Brown & Brown in 2015, Amy has developed a specialization over the past 4 years within the commercial agribusiness space and brings a wealth of knowledge and an aptitude in the field. She also has focuses in the manufacturing and professional lines sectors to complete her broad spectrum in the risk management area.
Prior to joining Brown & Brown, Amy worked within her family’s third-generation business. Growing up in this environment enabled Amy to develop a comprehensive understanding and passion for businesses and how they run. Additionally, Amy is a graduate of Bowling Green State University where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with a specialization in Sales & Services Marketing. She holds her Property & Casualty license and is pursuing her Agribusiness and Farm Insurance Specialist Certification.
Amy resides in Bowling Green, OH with her lovable dog. In her free time, she enjoys skiing, camping, and weekend trips to Put-in-Bay. She is an active participant of the Wood County Farm Bureau, EPIC Toledo, Women in Ag, and Toledo Ladies for the Clubs.
Employee Benefits Account Executive
James joined the Brown & Brown team in August of 2014. In his role as an Employee Benefits Account Executive, he assists employers in designing and managing their employee benefit plans. He has been recognized within Brown & Brown for his attention to detail and support to all new and existing customers.
Before he became a part of the Brown & Brown team, James had worked in a multitude of Human Resources type positions in the UK, Germany, and even Australia. Through this variety of experience, he had become well-versed in HR and Benefits at an international level. James completed his undergraduate work at Nottingham Trent University in his home country of England. He then came to northwest Ohio and earned his MBA with a Finance focus from Bowling Green State University. He also holds his Ohio Life and Health insurance licenses and has earned the Certificate of Global Benefits Management from the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans.
James currently resides in Toledo, Ohio. He enjoys playing soccer, cricket, and squash in his free time. He is also an active participant with EPIC Toledo, the Epilepsy Center of NOW, the Toledo Children’s Hospital, and the BGSU College of Business Alumni Board.
Employee Benefits Enrollment Services Leader
As our Enrollment Services Leader, Keia takes the lead on all enrollment services tasks and escalated enrollment issues for our clients’ employees. Along with this, she manages the workflow of our EDI feeds, working towards a consistent stream of information from our carriers to our clients. Additional responsibilities include educating clients on enrollment protocol, eligibility rules, and qualifying life events.
Prior to her current role, Keia was our Benefits Team Assistant when she joined the Brown & Brown team in March 2017. Before becoming a part of our team, she had graduated from Bowling Green State University with a degree in Business Management focusing on Human Resources. Post graduation, Keia was a recruiting specialist for large retail companies. Currently, she holds her Ohio Life and Health licenses and is pursuing her Masters in Human Resources.
Outside the office, you can find Keia either trying new foods and restaurants, working hard on her fitness goals, or playing board games with her family. Her ideal getaway is a long weekend in Chicago.
